Trans World Radio

There are two specific programs in which we partner...

"Oasis of Hope"

The Need

Although the home of the early Church, today only 4.5 percent of the Middle East’s 360 million people are affiliated with Christianity. Missionary radio represents one of the few ways to reach speakers of Egyptian Arabic, by far the most familiar dialect in the region.

Within this language group are women, youth and illiterates-those with the least access to the Gospel. Even if one could make available millions of Bibles free of charge, millions could not use them for the simple reason that they cannot read. Christian radio translates the written Word of God into audio voice, making the hearing of the Gospel possible. Reaching these segments in Egyptian society with the Gospel by means of radio is therefore imperative.

The Vision

International Christian broadcasters Trans World Radio and Back to the Bible formed a strategic alliance to produce, broadcast and follow up four strategic programs in the Egyptian Arabic language. These four programs are called Oasis of Hope broadcasts. Reaching Egypt’s largely unevangelized population of women, youth and non-literates has been the main focus of the Oasis of Hope programs, which began airing in 1998. The first three programs to go on the air in 1998 were Healing Touches, (for Arabic-speaking women), I Long for You (for a non-literate audience) and Street Talks (drama program for youth). Beginning in January 2002, TWR added another program, this one specifically for men titled The Way Companion. These 15-minute broadcasts are filling a great need in reaching those with little or no access to the Gospel.

The Ministry

Since 1974, TWR has been broadcasting to the Middle East. Strong signals from two stations reach the Arabic-speaking countries of the Middle East and North Africa with 25 hours of programming every week.

"Seminary on the Air"

The Need

The Church in China is exploding at a rate unparalleled in the history of Christendom. According to one source, the country with the fastest Christian expansion ever is China, now at 10,000 new converts every day (2001 World Christian Trends, William Carey Library, David Barrett and Todd Johnson). Others estimate the growth as high as 25,000 per day. But there is a daunting challenge: the number of house church leaders being trained is lagging well behind the addition of new believers. Untrained leadership lacking in both systematic theology and Bible training is resulting in wrong teaching, confusion and even cults.

The Vision
Since March 2001, Trans World Radio (TWR) has been providing intensive seminary training for those leading the millions of believers who gather secretly in house churches all over China. Building on many years of broadcast ministry into China from its superpower shortwave station on the island of Guam, TWR’s present initiative includes: production and airing of a three-year cycle of Seminary on the Air (SOTA) broadcasts, intensive hands-on training for 1,047 house church pastors, distribution of 500 audio resource libraries, the establishment of 5 in-country audio reproduction centers and the funding of Internet broadcasting (SOTA Online).

The Ministry
The world’s most far-reaching Christian broadcasting network, Trans World Radio broadcasts around the world in more than 190 languages and dialects. Radio is uniquely suited to penetrating the “Bamboo Curtain” to reach believers and church leaders in China-no matter where they live. It is one of the most effective, cost-efficient ways to reach the world’s most populous nation. TWR’s long history of ministry to China dates back to 1977, when its station on Guam was first established and began broadcasting into China. Although missionaries are not permitted within the country, TWR is there every day-broadcasting more than 165 hours each week to Northeast Asia, including China, and providing Internet programming 24 hours a day. TWR's Chinese staff works with some of the largest house church networks in all of China, several numbering in the millions. Every year, the staff conducts in-country training seminars for selected listeners of the SOTA broadcasts. For those who cannot attend the seminars, TWR provides SOTA classes on the Internet through its interactive SOTA Web site.
