Righteousness: Imparted or Imputed?

When thinking about believers being made righteous by faith, a significant question arises:

"How is God's Righteousness applied to those who believe?"

It may seem like splitting hairs, theologically, but there is a huge difference in what is meant by "imparted righteousness" and "imputed righteousness."
